Destiny of the Doctor: Night of the Whisper Review

Today, I continue my series of reviews of Big Finish and AudioGo's Destiny of the Doctor 50th anniversary series. This month, it's Night of the Whisper, written by Cavan Scott and Mark Wright, performed by Nicholas Briggs and John Schwab, and featuring the 9th Doctor, Rose Tyler, and Captain Jack.

I'm kinda annoyed that they departed from the usual format for the series and didn't use the actress for one of the companions as the voice actress. In the previous stories in the series, the actress who plays the companion has done the primary voice acting with another actor playing a secondary role. In this story, instead of Billie Piper, they used Nicholas Briggs for some reason. I was rather distracted for the first part of the story because it was two male voices instead of one male and one female and I was trying to figure out where John Schwab came in.

This story was about 10-20 minutes longer than the previous stories in the range, which I thought meant we were going to get more background into whatever is going on in the story arc. However, it turns out it was just an extra-long story. I'm getting increasingly impatient with this story arc trying to figure out what the eleventh Doctor is up to. He obviously needs a collection of items and people, but I can't figure out what they all have in common. There's an artificial intelligence, a magic rock, a psychic crystal ball, and now a police chief. They'd better have something really good in store for this November.

I really didn't see the identity of the Whisper coming. I thought it would be your average vigilante with high technology (like Batman). I totally didn't see corpse-cop alien hybrid coming. I'm also still confused as to why it went after Rose in the beginning scene. It should have been going after Wolfsbane, but for some reason it was targeting poor ole Rose.

I love how easily characters always break into heavily guarded facilities in TV and movies. In any story the bad guy is going to have hardly any problem breaking into the nuclear power plant, or the White House, or the top secret military base. In this case, the Whisper broke into the atmospheric generation facility. You'd think the plant responsible for keeping the entire city alive would be heavily guarded, but it appears there was only one guard. Of course, the Whisper easily dispatched the guard before they could get off a shot or call for back-up.

2013 Christmas Special Filming Summary Sept. 15-20

There hasn't been a whole lot going on in the way of set reporting this last week, but I've tried to summarize it here. They've been keeping the filming largely hush-hush, with not a lot of outdoor filming and plenty of private property.

BBC Coming to Hulu

Several BBC shows including Doctor Who, Torchwood, and Sherlock will be coming to Hulu Plus soon. Over 2,000 episodes will be made available, including a couple hundred this week. It's not clear yet whether they will be including classic era episodes, but given their arrangements with iTunes, Amazon, and Netflix, it seems likely that there will be at least some.

Possible Conclusions to Matt's Story Arc

As the end of Matt Smith's story arc draws near, we're still left with a few unanswered questions
  • Who blew up the TARDIS and why?
  • Whatever happened to the Silence?
  • What did John Hurt's Doctor do?
Steven Moffat said that the The Day of the Doctor is going to be looking towards the future. I think that not only are The Day of the Doctor and the Christmas special going to wrap up Matt's story arc, they're going to introduce something brand new for Peter Capaldi to deal with.

Given the evidence that something with the Time War is going to happen in the 50th, it seems like my theory about the Time Lords being responsible for the events of Series 5 might be relevant. On the other hand, it could be that the Silence are responsible, like many fans have speculated. A new possibility is that the John Hurt Doctor is somehow responsible. Why he would interfere with another Doctor's TARDIS, I don't know, but destroying the multiverse would be the horrible act that he could be guilty of.

One possibility for the Christmas Special is that the Silence find out that the Doctor is alive and they try to kill him again. They succeed, but he manages to regenerate before vanquishing them. I'm not sure how the Cybermen would be involved with that, possibly as allies of the Silence.

The Day of the Doctor Previously Trailer

So I made a "previously" type trailer for the The Day of the Doctor about a month ago and forgot to post it. Here it is.

50th Anniversary Previously Trailer by WhyRuntotheTARDIS

Filming Reports September 13th-14th

There a whole mixed bag of filming reports, so I'll try to sort through them.

First off there's this video, which shows Matt and Jenna filming the Christmas Special at a private location.

Second, there's a whole bunch of filming reports from one @mrseance. Some people on Twitter are dubbing them as fakes, I honestly don't know. It's possible they're filming a bunch of crazy stuff for the 50th and Christmas, it's also possible he's making them up. In the sake of openness, I've posted a collection of them below.

Christmas Special Soundtrack

So in case you're like me and were wondering where the The Doctor, the Widow and the Wardrobe and The Snowmen were in the Series 7 soundtrack, fear not! Silva Screen is releasing them on their own special set.
At one time Christmas Day on the BBC meant The Morecambe & Wise Show for families to gather around the TV but in the modern era that mantle has now been taken by the Doctor Who Christmas Special. This ninth release in the series brings the full canon of Murray Gold's prolific output up to date, eight years of elaborately created scores for one of the BBC's most popular shows worldwide. The booklet for this release is reverse printed to allow the purchaser to display either of two covers for both soundtracks.

Video for The Beast of Babylon

The video for this month's eShort is now out. The Beast of Babylon is written by Charlie Higson and will be released on the 23rd of this month.

Peter Davison to Appear in 50th

Peter Davison has confirmed that he will appear in the 50th anniversary in some capacity. It's not known whether he will have a part in The Day of the Doctor, although he does have a copy of the script.
I’m making an appearance somewhere over that period of time but I can’t reveal in what. I can’t reveal anything specific about it. I’m not allowed to. It is a big year for the show and we’re all doing our bit for it. Trust me.
It is possible he was referring to the Big Finish production, The Light at the End. However, since he refused to comment on his involvement, it seems likely it's something more top secret than that.

Filming for Have I Got News for You

Fans on Twitter were confused earlier today when it appeared there was filming going on involving the fourth and seventh Doctors. The filming was taking place at College Garden in London, near Parliament. Paul Merton was dressed as the 4th Doctor and Ian Hislop was out as the 7th. It turns out it wasn't for Doctor Who, but was instead a special promotion for Have I Got News for You.

The Doctors Revisited to Air on Watch

The Radio Times has announced that the BBC America specials known as The Doctors Revisited will be airing in the UK. The specials feature a look back at each of the eleven Doctors, as well as a special airing of one story from each Doctor.

The episodes will begin airing on Watch on Saturday, October 12th. You can find the full schedule here.

The Day of the Doctor Possible Synopsis

So I saw a leak of what may be the synopsis of The Day of the Doctor on my Facebook newsfeed last night. Then again, it may be fake.
The Doctor and Clara are still trapped within the Doctor's timeline. The only way to escape is to reopen the lock that conceals the Doctor’s darkest day. The Time War.

Moffat on Getting Rid of Matt

Moffat gave a few words to Entertainmentwise on letting go of Matt Smith.
It’s hard to let go, watching him on set yesterday (Sunday) and he’s so heartbreakingly good. You get all excited about the new Doctor and then you go back and you see Matt on his first day back on set and you think ‘oh my God that’s what we’re losing’. He’s so brilliant and he’s at the height of his powers in the part, he’s so funny, so clever, so inventive.

Press Release Regarding 50th Anniversary Celebrations

The BBC have issued a press release regarding their celebrations of the 50th Anniversary. Some of this information was already revealed this morning, but this goes into more detail.
The countdown starts here as the BBC reveals its plans to take over TV and radio to mark the Doctor’s 50th anniversary.

With special programmes planned across the BBC, the celebrations will peak on 23 November with the anniversary episode, revealed as The Day Of The Doctor. Starring Matt Smith, David Tennant and Jenna Coleman with Billie Piper and John Hurt, the special for BBC One has been confirmed as feature-length, with 75 minutes of adventure.

Matt Smith, who plays the Doctor, says: “The Day Of The Doctor is nearly here! Hope you all enjoy. There’s lots more coming your way, as the countdown to the 50th begins now.”

Each channel will be home to unique content, celebrating the wealth of history and talent from the last 50 years.

BBC Two will broadcast a number of new commissions, focusing on telling the story behind the show. For one night only, Professor Brian Cox will take an audience of celebrity guests and members of the public on a journey into the wonderful universe of the Doctor, from the lecture hall of the Royal Institution of Great Britain (1×60 minutess). Drawing on the latest theories, as well as 200 years of scientific discoveries and the genius of Einstein, Brian tries to answer the classic questions raised by the Doctor: Can you really travel in time? Does extra-terrestrial life exist in our galaxy? And how do you build something as fantastical as the TARDIS?

In an hour-long special, BBC Two’s flagship arts programme The Culture Show presents Me, You And Doctor Who (1×60 minutes), with lifelong fan Matthew Sweet exploring the cultural significance of the BBC’s longest running TV drama, arguing that it’s one of the most important cultural artefacts of modern Britain. Put simply, Doctor Who matters. He’ll examine how the show has become a cultural force in its own right and tell the stories of some of the unsung cultural heroes, who pioneered its innovative music, design and storytelling.

BBC Two wraps up its coverage with the previously announced An Adventure In Space and Time (1×90 minutes), which will tell the story of the genesis of Doctor Who and the many personalities involved. Written by Mark Gatiss, the drama stars David Bradley (the Harry Potter films); Brian Cox (The Bourne Supremacy, The Bourne Identity), Jessica Raine (Call The Midwife) and Sacha Dhawan (History Boys, Last Tango In Halifax).

Steven Moffat, lead writer and executive producer of Doctor Who, says: “Fifty years has turned Doctor Who from a television show into a cultural landmark. Personally I can’t wait to see what it becomes after a hundred.”

BBC Four will introduce audiences to the first Doctor, William Hartnell, with a special re-run of the first-ever story, which marked the start of 50 years of history. The four episodes are being shown in a restored format, not previously broadcast in the UK.

There will also be programmes across CBBC with 12 Again (1×30 minutes) bringing together CBBC’s super-fan Chris Johnson, impressionist Jon Culshaw, Tommy Knight (Luke Smith), Warwick Davis (Porridge), Neve McIntosh (Madame Vastra), Dan Starkey (Strax) Louise Jameson (Leela) and the seventh Doctor, Sylvester McCoy, to share their memories of watching TV’s top Time Lord when they were young.

Blue Peter will launch an exciting new competition giving viewers aged between six and 14 the opportunity to design a new gadget that will become part of the iconic science fiction series. Two live Blue Peter specials will see presenters Barney, Lindsey and Radzi joined by aliens and monsters, with viewers challenging Matt Smith to answer their Doctor Who questions.

BBC Three will be home to several exciting entertainment commissions. Audiences will be encouraged to get involved and vote in Doctor Who: Monsters And Villains Weekend, as we countdown to the top Doctor Who monster. For those less familiar with the show, Doctor Who: The Ultimate Guide will introduce fans and viewers to a wealth of archive material and act as a guide to all things Who. A further exciting commission to be announced later this year will see the celebrations finish with a bang.

Danny Cohen, Director of BBC Television, says: “Doctor Who is a titan of British television and I’m incredibly proud to have it on the BBC. It’s an astonishing achievement for a drama to reach its 50th anniversary. I’d like to thank every person – on both sides of the camera – who has been involved with its creative journey over so many years.”

It’s not just TV where audiences will be able join in the celebrations; programming across Radio 2, Radio 1 and Radio 4 Extra will also mark the 50th.

BBC Radio 2 will ask Who Is The Doctor? in a 90-minute documentary featuring newly recorded interviews and exclusive archive material. The programme will look at the lasting appeal of Doctor Who and ask how much of its continued success can be attributed to its basic formula.

In The Blagger’s Guide To Doctor Who, David Quantick will give the iconic Doctor the Blagger’s treatment. He’ll be finding out the answers to questions such as, why do Americans think Tom Baker is still Doctor Who? How many Doctors have there really been? Were the Daleks really named after an encyclopaedia?

Finally, Graham Norton will be broadcasting his weekly Radio 2 show live (Saturday 23 November, 10am) from the Doctor Who Celebration in London. In a special three-hour show, Graham will take a ride in the TARDIS and will also be chatting with some of the series’ stars and fans.

Music is a key part of Doctor Who, from the famous theme tune to soaring melodies, but the show has also inspired a whole new phenomenon – Time Lord Rock (TROCK). Radio 1 will look at this genre of music inspired by the Doctor and his journeys through space and time with a 60-minute documentary.

Meanwhile, Radio 4 Extra travels back to 1963 with a three-hour special programme, Who Made Who?, to look at the world that inspired the television series. Doctor Who may have come from other times, but his roots were very much in the present of 1960s Britain. This distinctive programme combines audio from the archive, new interviews and extracts from audio versions of Doctor Who. Additionally, the station will broadcast readings and dramas featuring the great Doctor.

There will also be special content across the official website bbc.co.uk/doctorwho and on BBC iPlayer.

The Day of the Doctor First Promo Pics

The BBC have released the first promotional images for the 50th anniversary special, The Day of the Doctor.

The Name of the 50th?

BBC Four will introduce new audiences to Hartnell, with a re-run of the first ever story. The four episodes are being shown in a restored format, not previously broadcast in the UK.
BBC Two’s flagship arts programme The Culture Show is to present Me, You and Doctor Who, with lifelong fan Matthew Sweet exploring the cultural significance of the BBC’s longest running TV drama.
A 90-minute documentary on BBC Radio 2 will ask “Who Is The Doctor?” – using newly-recorded interviews and exclusive archive material to find an answer – while BBC Three will be home to several commissions.
The anniversary episode sees the return of the Daleks For those less familiar with the show, Doctor Who: The Ultimate Guide will provide a handy primer.
Danny Cohen, Director BBC Television said: “It’s an astonishing achievement for a drama to reach its 50th anniversary.
“I’d like to thank every person – on both sides of the camera – who has been involved with its creative journey over so many years.”
Smith has already started filming his final scenes as the Doctor, which are due to air in this year’s Christmas episode. His replacement, Scots actor Peter Capaldi, was announced in August.

In Best Drama Series it went up against Call the Midwife, Downtown Abbey, and Waterloo Road. Matt Smith faced off against David Tennant, Brendan Coyle, and Jeremy Piven. Jenna went toe to toe with Olivia Coleman, Miranda Hart, and Sheridan Smith.

Doctor Who walked off with Best Drama Series and Outstanding Contribution to TV, while Miranda Hart and David Tennant won their awards.

Classic Doctors Protesting 50th? Or Sneaky Filming?

Classic Doctors Peter Davison, Colin Baker, and Sylvester McCoy were seen protesting the 50th Anniversary outside the BBC Television Center earlier today. They were seen holding signs such as "No classics? No 50th!!" and "Have a heart, classic Doctors want a part."

It is likely that the protests were faked as they were being filmed by a small crew. They were also not attempting to draw attention to themselves like a normal protest would. In addition, you have to wonder what a protest this long after production would accomplish.

A deleted tweet from stunt extra Darrelle Parker has revealed that the Cybermen are returning this Christmas. The Cybermen were last seen two episodes ago in Nightmare in Silver and were last in a Christmas special five years ago. They are also rumored to be appearing in the 50th Anniversary special this November. It is currently unclear whether they will be the main villain at Christmas or if they will simply be side characters.

BBC on Lack of 50th Anniversary Content

The BBC have responded to fan complaints about lack of promotional content for the 50th anniversary.

https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=627205867299835&set=a.500946183259138.112990.470911516262605&type=1&theater
It appears that whatever's happening, won't be happening until closer to the anniversary itself. We might not be getting anything until November. Then again, we might get something next week. Nobody really knows.
