Doctor Who Coming to Minecraft

BBC Worldwide has announced that it will be releasing an official set of Minecraft skins for Xbox Live starting later this year.
BBC Worldwide are delighted to announce a deal with Microsoft Studios and Mojang which will bring Doctor Who - the world’s longest running science fiction drama – to ‘Minecraft: Xbox 360 Edition’.

From September 2014, Minecraft players will have access to a range of Doctor Who assets which will allow them to change their avatar to resemble their favourite characters from the show. The first pack – priced at just $2.99/£1.99/€2.85/$2.95AUS – will include a character inspired by the Twelfth Doctor as well as five other Doctors, each of their on-screen companions and some of the Doctor’s most well known adversaries including his arch-nemeses, the Daleks.

Rikesh Desai, Digital Entertainment and Games Director at BBC Worldwide UK says “We’re constantly looking for new and innovative ways to bring Doctor Who content to our loyal fans. Working collaboratively with Microsoft, we’ve created an exciting new product which will allow Doctor Who fans to create their own brand new adventures in the heart of the iconic world of Minecraft.”

The deal will bring more packs as time goes on, introducing many of the most recognisable characters from the past 50 years of Doctor Who. Each skin pack will feature at least six Doctors and will be released regularly following the broadcast of the first episode.

Minecraft is one of the fastest selling Xbox game of all time with over 13 million sales to date. The deal to bring Doctor Who to Minecraft builds on BBC Worldwide’s successful partnership with Microsoft, which has seen Microsoft publish Forza racing games complete with Top Gear themed challenges and features.

Minecraft is a game about breaking and placing blocks. At first, people built structures to protect against nocturnal monsters, but as the game grew, players worked together to create wonderful, imaginative things.

It can also be about adventuring with friends or watching the sun rise over a blocky ocean. It’s pretty. Brave players battle terrible things in The Nether, which is more scary than pretty. You can also visit a land of mushrooms if it sounds more like your cup of tea.

Series 8 Teaser 12

New teaser for this week's Doctor Who

Deep Breath Review

Overall, I thought this was a great introduction to both the new series and Peter's Doctor. However, The Eleventh Hour will still be my favorite.

Steven has at least partway fulfilled his promise to explain Peter's multiple past appearances in the show. The Doctor recognized his face and knew he had seen it before. His conversation with the Half-Faced Man in the restaurant while holding the plate showed how neither of them really knew where they had gotten their face from. It also does seem to suggest that the face does come from somewhere. We already know that besides the Doctor, there are other Colin Bakers and Patrick Troughtons (and I think William Hartnells) out there in that universe. So there could be another Matt Smith or Christopher Eccleston as well.

Clara seems to have developed as a character since The Name of the Doctor. Back in series 7b, there were a fair number of fans complaining how she was two-dimensional and not very well developed. In Day and Time, we got to see some aspects of her personal life and family. Having seen the next four episodes, I can confirm that there will be more of this. Also, the description for episode 9 seems to suggest that it is Doctor-lite.

Finally, the mystery of the woman in the shop was addressed. To recap, all the way back in The Bells of Saint John, Clara was given the TARDIS phone number by a woman describing it as the "best helpline in the universe". Some fans speculated it was River Song, however since Clara has now met her, she would have simply said that it was River when the Doctor asked her. Since she did not, it implies that someone else gave her the number. Whether or not it was the same person who put the ad in the newspaper remains to be seen.

This episode gives us the definite beginnings of a story-arc. I thought the arc for this season would center around Gallifrey. It might still relate back to that, but Moffat seems to be intent on introducing a brand new character in the form of the Gatekeeper of the Nethersphere (aka Missy). When I say "brand new", I mean brand new to us, since she appears to already know the Doctor. Unless, of course, she is actually the Black Guardian. I've got an entire conspiracy theory as to how the White Guardian was involved in The End of Time, so it makes sense to introduce the Black as well.

The opening credits were fantastic. I really liked the clock theme. The problem I have is that it's not been that long since the credits last changed. Back in 2012, if Moffat knew Matt was leaving soon, he should have kept the credits the same until Matt left. Either that, or start switching the credits out when the companion leaves instead of the Doctor. I just think two shifts in as many years is too many. The other thing is that they use the credits in-show to display the time vortex. So whenever they change the credits, the vortex changes appearance, too. Some phenomenon of nature isn't going to just randomly change appearance like that.

Someone in the 51st century has a thing for pre-revolutionary French women. Probably Captain Jack. The question is, why are they staffing their ships with homicidal robots? The robots seem more intent that the ship reaches its destination than that the crew does. The first parts for the Marie Antoinette probably came from its crew, much like the Madame de Pompadour. Also, if you have sophisticated temporal engines, why are you making mechanical droids? Why not build a complex electronic one (like Data from Star Trek)? One possible explanation is that someone was trying to build a large fleet of ships to search the cosmos for the Promised Land. It wasn't that important that the crew return home, just that someone transmit the information. The mechanical droids originated from stretching resources out as far as possible.

This episode also saw the Doctor drawing some chalk scribbles. They featured rather prominently in both some promo shots and the script for episode 4. It appears the Doctor transferred them from Vastra's floor onto the new chalkboards in the TARDIS. I'm guessing he's trying to complete the calculations that were done in The Day of the Doctor.

Feige Confirms Black Panther and Ms. Marvel

Kevin Feige has confirmed development of Black Panther and Ms. Marvel storylines. Speaking to IGN, he said
Should I announce it? No, I’m not announcing. But it's something…they are both characters that we like, that development work has been done on and is continuing to be done on. And certainly, the public… it’s a question I get asked more than anything else… more than Iron Man 4... more than Avengers 3. And that’s sort of the first time that’s really happened to us. And I think that makes a difference. I think that’s something we have to pay attention to.

More Info on First 4 Episodes

Doctor Who Magazine has released a peek at the new season of the show.

Deep Breath synopsis
The TARDIS crashes back down to Earth, and the new Doctor is taken into the care of his friends, Madame Vastra, Jenny Flint and Strax. But there is also a new terror luring on the streets of Victorian London – a sinister half-faced man, who is definitely not local…
Deep Breath quote
Clara: You said renewed. He doesn’t look renewed, he looks… older.
Vastra: Did you think he was young?
Clara: He looked young.
Vastra: He looked like your dashing young gentleman friend. Your lover, even.
Clara: Shut up!
Vastra: But he is the Doctor. He has walked this universe for centuries untold, and seen stars fall to dusk. You might as well flirt with a mountain range.
Into the Dalek synopsis
In a faraway galaxy, the Doctor encounters his greatest foes once again. But, as the Daleks close in on a ragtag group of survivors, has the Doctor found the key to defeating his enemies once and for all?
Into the Dalek quote
The Doctor: And all this is the cortex vault, a supplementary electronic brain. Memory banks – but more than that. This is what keeps the Dalek pure.
Gretchen: How are Daleks pure?
The Doctor: Daleks are born hating. This is what stokes the fire. Extinguishes even the tiniest glimmer of compassion or kindness. Imagine the worst possible thing in the universe, and then don’t bother – because you’re looking at it right now. Evil refined as engineering.
Robot of Sherwood synopsis
The Doctor offers Clara a chance to go anywhere in space and time – her choice. Clara asks if she can go to Sherwood Forest in the twelfth century and meet Robin Hood… but the Doctor is dismissive of the idea. There’s no such thing as Robin Hood. He’s made up. Or is he…?
Robot of Sherwood quote
Robin: I am Robin Hood, sir.
The Doctor: No, you’re not.
Robin: I am, sir.
The Doctor: Of course you’re not! Nobody’s Robin Hood. There is no Robin Hood!
Robin: There is, sir, and I am he.
The Doctor: You’re not serious.
Robin: I am many things but never that. Robin Hood laughs in the face of all!
Listen synopsis
Clara has a date to keep with Danny. So the last thing she needs is the Doctor turning up, uninvited, needing her for ‘a thing’…
Listen quote
Doctor: Question! Why do we talk out loud when we know we’re alone? (A beat, looks around) Conjecture: because we know we are not.
