Girls, Girls, Girls Review

It appears that Rowena is definitely the main villain this season and not Cole. Of course, there was no way a mere human was going to be the big bad, but both villains were unresolved until this point. After this episode, Cole is probably going to stop chasing Dean. Whether he goes home to his family and stays there or becomes a hunter remains to be seen. Supernatural is full of one-off characters, so it's likely he'll never return, but not impossible. Rowena's goals as a villain don't seem to be established yet. The fact that's she's imprisoned in hell suggests the brothers won't be dealing with her for a while. In fact, now that Crowley's a series regular, Rowena may be his problem, especially considering she's his mom. However, I can't see the brothers not having some over-arcing story this season. Therefore, it's more likely that she'll pop back into their lives at some point.

I was really starting to ship Hannah/Castiel. I think Hannah leaving her vessel has more to do with feelings for Cas than the hardships they put their vessels through. If she had found a way out the situation with he vessel's husband that didn't involve kissing Cas, then she wouldn't have left. She only did it because it was awkward and she didn't want to confront her feelings for him. Also, Cas had already expressed a desire to ignore any human feelings that might come between them. So maybe she thought he didn't want romance and decided to leave before one formed.

It appears Hell's soul acquisition rate is down since Abaddon took over. Crowley did warn her that calling in contracts early would cause people to lose confidence in the market. I'm really not sure how many people would actually be aware of contracts being called in early. Even if they were, selling your soul is an act of desperation and some people might not care that they wouldn't get the full ten years out of it. There may be other factors at play as well. Abaddon may have killed a lot of demons that were loyal to Crowley, reducing their supply of souls. She may have chosen to call in contracts early in order to make up for that deficit. Now that the influx has been reduced due to a return to contract conditions, Hell may be lacking in souls.

Star Trek TV Series Proposal

I've decided to write up my idea for a new Star Trek TV series.
  • 25-27th century
  • The Federation has explored most of the galaxy, incorporated many more civilizations, gained countless allies, and developed brand new enemies.
  • The Romulans and Cardassians are part of the Federation.
  • The Klingons are still allies.
  • The Borg have been relegated to only a few scattered systems, but are still dangerous to anyone who ventures too close. Most of their drones were liberated in the late 24th/early 25th centuries. Of course, a new, more dangerous enemy has taken their place.
  • The Warp 10 barrier has been broken.
  • All Starfleet ships are equipped with phased cloaks and a full AI standard.
  • When the captain issues a particular voice command, the AI can control all systems and the ship can function with zero crew. The AI can also inform the crew of equipment malfunctions and intruders/security issues.
  • There is a minority of androids similar to Data, they have equal rights in the Federation, but still face discrimination by some.
  • Takes place in the original timeline. If it takes place in the reboot universe, then it doesn't star one of the crews that we've already seen (i.e. isn't a retelling of TNG, DS9, or Voyager).
  • Doctor Who crossover story (they were going to do this in 2005 with Enterprise, but CBS scrapped the show)
  • Delta quadrant species from Voyager are mentioned and/or seen.
  • One of the season-long story arcs can center on a disaster on a planet that was considering joining the Federation. Some people think Starfleet Intelligence engineered the disaster to force the civilization to join the Federation.
  • The Federation Army and/or Navy are seen.

Mockingjay, Part 1 Review

The most interesting part of seeing this movie was knowing the plot in advance, but not where in the plot the film would end. Normally, when I watch a movie based on a book, I use where in the plot I am to determine how much runtime is left. Here, I know the plot, but not the point where it's cut in two. So, since I couldn't look at my phone in the theater, I was wondering the whole time when it would end, right up until "The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part I" appeared on the screen.

I wasn't really expecting Peeta to look so malnourished after he was rescued. He looked perfectly healthy on TV, but he clearly lost a lot of weight. He couldn't have lost it all in the few days between the attack and his rescue, so I'm guessing it was down to Capital make up and his suit. Hospital gowns are very revealing and there was no one on hand to make him look his best.

I'm glad they put the crazy cat game in there. By that, I'm referring to Katniss' name for the flashlight game she and Prim played with Buttercup. In the book, they rationed extra batteries for it because people were enjoying it. I just found it entertaining and true to the nature of cats.

Did anyone else notice Snow's foreshadowing of Peeta? Katniss didn't. Gale mentioned that the Capital let them fly out, even though their weapons were back online. President Snow must have ordered that so Katniss could see what happened to Peeta. Snow wanted her to know that he still had enough control to hurt her friends. He didn't just want to end the rebellion, he wanted to break her.

I seem to recall The Hunger Games mentioning that the tribute building was only 13 floors high. There was one floor for each district, plus common areas and an underground training center. It was certainly not a towering skyscraper. I'm sure the Capital would find some way to fill a 100-story building designed to train teenagers, but that's not how it was in the book. I can't remember whether they included the rooftop scene in the first movie, but it'd be interesting to see if they got the height wrong there, too.

They definitely changed Effie's role in the movie. In the book, Katniss found her in a District 13 prison with the rest of the prep team. I forget how far through the book that was (whether it would've been in Part 1 or 2). The writers were very careful to counteract that part of the book by giving Plutarch a line where he tells Effie that she's not a prisoner. I also remember one of the cast saying in an interview that Effie replaces one of Plutarch's assistants in the film.

It looks like Part 2 is going to be most of the fight scenes and the conclusion. President Coin said at the end that the next day (or sometime soon) they were going to storm the Nut in District 2. After that comes the fighting in the Capital, President Snow's execution, and Katniss' recovery. The next part is definitely going to be the more action-packed half of the finale. Hopefully, it will be longer, too. The first two films were both around 2.5 hours long, while this one was only 2 hours, 3 minutes. If not for Peeta's rescue, it would have been even shorter, since that wasn't in the original book.

Mockingjay, Part 1 Hits Top Opening Weekend

Mockingjay, Part 1 has become the highest-grossing opening weekend film of 2014. The film made US$123 million in the United States, and an additional $152 million overseas. This puts it ahead of previous lead Transformers: Age of Extinction and behind the previous two franchise members ($152.5 and $158.1 million in the US). Mockingjay did outperform its predecessors overseas, however. It's also the 15th biggest opening of all time, not considering inflation.
